Fred Eaglesmith - Saturday, May 19th 8:00
Fred Eaglesmith isn't an act, he's a culture!
Like Deadheads followed Garcia, like Parrotheads flock to see Jimmy Buffet, Fredheads come from far and wide to whoop it up with their Hero, Fred Eaglesmith. Who else would follow up a soulful album about spirituality with a Tom Waits-esque CD entitled "Cha Cha Cha"? Who else can write a ferociously funny song about alcholol and guns and then bring tears to your eyes with a ballad about cheatin' hearts?
A Fred Eaglesmith gig is more than a concert, it's a show, a stand up comedy routine, a travelling carnival, and a good ol' fashion honky tonk all rolled into one! He's Willie Nelson meets Warren Zevon, Mark Twain meets Hunter S. Thompson, Jimmy Buffet sprinkled on Johnny Cash, and the warm humor of John Prine marinated in Neil Young.
Yet for all that, he's 100% Original!
Fred J. Eaglesmith was born, as he sings in his song Indian Motorcycles, "in the springtime of the '57 Chevy." Growing up on a series of farms in southern Ontario, as one of nine children born into a farming family, Eaglesmith recalls spending his childhood in two places: working on the farm, or going to church. He started writing and playing music, influenced by Elvis and the sounds of roots music drifting into Ontario from far-away radio stations. He bought his first guitar with $12 he saved from his chores and hard work. When his family lost their farm, Eaglesmith, then 16, left home, hopped freight trains out west and traveled.
Eaglesmith has been blazing his own trail ever since. Doing upwards of 200 shows a year, he is one of the only remaining outlaw troubadors to truly live up to that label, always running his own show, and always putting the FANS FIRST!
The tour actively seeks out the backwater side roads to meet their fans half way, and now for the second time ever, Fred Eaglesmith comes to Bainbridge Island!
Tickets go on sale Monday, March 5th @ 8:00am.

Dusty 45s with Shane Tutmarc - Saturday, May 26th, 2012 8:00
Seattle's perennial rockabilly madmen, The Dusty 45s, were recently tapped to back Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Wanda Jackson on her tour in support of her blazing, Jack White-produced new record. They toured throughout the West, opening for Grammy winning Adele. Founder Billy Joe Huels was raised on a farm in Southern Illinois. Growing up with a soundtrack of honky tonk and his parents' collection of 40's swing era LP's, he developed a broad appreciation for American roots music. He found his passion when his father bought him his first trumpet at age 10 and the performer in him came alive. Billy Joe's charismatic stage presence now includes a rippin' Telecaster guitar, and a trumpet which serves as an extension of himself. By the end of the show, the trumpet ends up on fire, literally. His original songs are delivered with panache by Seattle's finest roots-rock wrecking crew: Jerry Battista on lead guitar, Kelly Van Camp on drums, and Jeff Gray on upright bass. The Dusty 45s have a reputation for firing up the crowd. They deliver their rockin', high-energy music at just the right throttle to keep fans on their feet, begging for more. Over the years, the group has devoured styles ranging from twang country, jump blues, surf, and pure rock & roll, mixed-in elements from influences such as Dixieland and Jazz, and now serve-it-up as a sizzling sound all their own. The Dusty 45s have been thrilling crowds for over a decade. The readers of the Seattle Weekly voted them "Best of Seattle" 3 years in a row. In 2007 Huels enchanted the theater crowd, starring as Buddy Holly in Seattle's 5th Avenue Theater's production of "The Buddy Holly Story." With thousands of miles on the tour van odometer, and a committed fan base in the western US and Europe, the Dusty 45s bring their road-tested powerhouse to The Treehouse this Memorial Day! Get your tickets early, and have your boots on! Seattle Native turned Nashville Roots Rocker Shane Tutmarc opens the show, 8pm!

The Wheeler Brothers - Saturday, June 2nd 8:00
From Austin, Texas, a town where standing out really means something, The Wheeler Brothers are moving to the front of the pack. They absolutely conquered this year's new music showcase Mecca, South By Southwest! Compared to everyone from The Avett Brothers to Band of Horses, The Wheeler Brothers stand up strong on their own. Their sound is country; their sound is indie rock, their sound is true to tradition and yet fresh. Clear, energetic and tight, this music will have you dancing, cheering, and swept away in the moment. Full of influences by everyone from Willie and Waylon to Ray LaMontagne, these guys bring it, and you might see anything from acordians to cellos or lap steel guitars, all woven together seamlessly. The Wheeler Brothers have created a sound that has put their name in the forefront of the Austin music scene. Their debut album “Portraits,” released in late June of 2011, was met with rave reviews on a local and national level. The release was backed by Texas swing legend Ray Benson (Asleep At The Wheel) and his label Bismeaux Records. Support from Benson, as well as a commanding presence on college radio, helped pave the way for Wheeler Brothers to roll out their first national tour in the summer of 2011. While debuting on the festival scene, Wheeler Brothers have also gained recognition supporting national acts such as Bob Schneider and Drive by Truckers. Back home in Austin, Wheeler Brothers are constantly looking for venues to accommodate their growing fan base and consistently sold out performances.

Kris Orlowski - Saturday, June 9th 2012 8:00
Brilliant simplicity. Kris Orlowski's richly textured and finely crafted love songs nail it. He has been compared (by people who should know) to everyone from the Eliott Smith and Paul Westerberg to the soulfulness of Jason Mraz and John Mayer. He is young, but he has an old heart, influenced by the likes of The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Nick Drake and The Shins. Kris is turning heads and gathering momentum. He has played to sold out shows at the Triple Door, KEXP's City Arts Fest, Bumbershoot, and opened for good friend Allen Stone at The Neptune. His innovative album "Live at the Fremont Abby" assembled a stellar cast of strings and choir to forge a haunting marriage of folk, pop, classical, baroque and mystic music that defies comparison. The moment you hear his plaintive voice against the swaying rhythmic guitar, you know you've found something original, profound, and full of soul. Like Wilco, Kris Orlowski is trying to break your heart, but the pain never felt so sweet.
One member of Kris' choir for the Fremont Abby project was Zach Fleury. In addition to an incredible voice, Fleury has played guitar and drums for many Seattle luminaries including Maclemore, Noah Gunderson, and Hot Bodies in Motion. His percussive jazzy guitar melds a bass-heavy blues style with intricate melodic riffs that make this one man show sound like a whole band. Sumptuous original arrangements and a distinctive vocal style reminiscent of Martin Sexton or even Georgie Fame. Zach lives and plays regularly on Bainbridge Island and will bring his own crew and energy to Kris Orlowski's. He opens the evening with his own dazzling originals in what promises to be a memorable night of serious moonlight!

Amy LaVere - Friday, June 15th 8:00
Amy LaVere is country music with teeth. As Spin Magazine says of her latest album: "Part winsome alt-country gal, and part avenging angel, Amy LaVere has made the breakup album of the year." Those of you lucky enough to catch her last September at the Treehouse for Taste of Lynwood won't need convincing - she received more standing ovations than you could count!
Born in Louisiana, Amy has starred as Wanda Jackson in the film Walk The Line, as well as appeared on MTV's $5 Cover series. She is as comfortable recording a torch song at legendary Sun Studios in Memphis as she is covering a Captain Beefheart tune. Her music has been featured on such diverse media as Conan O'Brien, NPR, KBCS, and KEXP.
She crosses musical borders effortlessly, always bringing the swing and soul with her. Several years into her career, Amy LaVere is still defying description, defining her own terms, and winning fans and peers alike, such as Craig Silvey, Grammy-winning producer for Arcade Fire, who jumped at the chance to produce her new album, Stranger Me.
Take a listen to the result - a little Lucinda Williams, a little Tori Amos, a little Norah Jones, a little Emmy-Lou Harris, but mostly a whole lot of soul, searching, and talent packed into the voice and bass playing of this southern girl bound for bright lights! Don't miss his reprise performance at The Treehouse Cafe!

Flypaper - Saturday, June 23 8:00pm
Fly Paper combines youthful energy, classic power trio rhythms, and dedicated musicianship into a lucious package featuring the brilliant Micaela Kingslight on lead guitar. Her voice is often compared to Fiona Apple and KT Tunstall. Her serious guitar playing carries on the traditions of Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmore, and Jimmy Page.
In 2008, she was awarded the Emerging Artist Grant from the Gilmore Foundation, and later won 1st place in the 2010 Indiegrrl International Songwriting Contest for her song "Aurora." She headlined the 2010 Indiegrrl Music Conference in Knoxville TN. Fly Paper has since toured extensively and been featured on numberous radio stations across the country. The band will be featured in the "On the Rise" section of Relix Magazine's March 2012 issue.
All three Fly Paper members are classically trained. Percussionist Ashley Ickes has studied jazz and taught for eight years; she is proficient in rock, jazz, funk, R&B, electronic, Afro-Cuban, and Brazilian music, among others. She brings the thunder of John Bonham and the elegance of Mitch Mitchell together in a unique fusion of jazz and rock drumming that deepens Fly Paper's appeal. Bassist Joe Chamberlin was classically trained on violin and clarinet and has fronted and toured with his own blues and experimental bands. Together, these talented young artists mold rock, folk, and jazz and blues into a fresh and unforgettable musical experience.

Kelly Joe Phelps - Thursday, July 12th 8:00
Kelly Joe Phelps is that rare combination of talent and emotion, with the soul of a searcher. He is a singer’s singer, a songwriter’s songwriter, and, most of all, a guitar player’s player – who produces a whole new kind of gold from all this alchemy.
He is a consummate artist, always honing his craft. The precision and instincts of Doc Watson and Mississippi John Hurt; the exquisite voice and emotion of James Taylor and Stephen Stills. And the wiley songwriting of Greg Brown and Steve Earle. In a word: consummate.
But why not let Steve Earle himself say it: "Kelly Joe Phelps plays, sings, and writes the blues. HOLD UP before you lock that in – forget about songs in a twelve bar three chord progression – though he can certainly do that when he wants to – I’m talking about a feeling, a smoky, lonesome, painful – yet somehow comforting groove that lets you know that you are not alone – even when you’re blue. Play on brother.”
Watching Kelly Joe play guitar is a little like witnessing Ahmad Jamal make love to his piano. Here’s what another consummate guitarist, Bill Frisell says:
“… Sounds like he’s coming from the inside out. The bottom up. He’s not just playing ‘AT’ the music or trying to recreate or imitate something that’s happened in the past. He seems to have tapped into the artery somehow. There’s a lot going on in between and behind the notes. Mystery. He’s been an inspiration to me.”
Maybe that’s why he’s not a household word. Kelly Joe has been too busy submerging himself in his art, exploring the backroads and tasting the local cooking. The San Diego Troubadour calls him “The Phantom Monk of Folk Blues.” He has become a bit of a ghost rider, known over the past 17 years of touring as much for his lone wolf direction as his passionate spirit.
In the words of The New York Times:
“…his airy playing conjuring a pocket of supernatural space. He manipulated his fretboard to create eerie harmonics as he slipped from a mumble to a falsetto, as if to follow the soul beyond the physical realm.”
Sometimes, it seems like the song might even be playing him, rather than the other way around. “I approach music this way,” he says, “to give it a chance to breathe, walk, or whisper. Improvising, even in small amounts, turns a piece of music into a conversation… The emotional complexity of us, in any one moment, can be musically represented through improvisation…”
The culture website PopMatters, says, “Phelps speaks directly to your soul. If that isn’t the stuff of legends, I don’t know what is.”
But maybe Tim O’Brien said it best: “When I heard Kelly Joe the first time, I was amazed how it all made so much sense. His music is a wide world with three hundred and sixty degrees of influence…. Kelly Joe is a musical slight of hand master. He pulls world wide sounds out of his guitar.”
You can buy the CD, but that won’t even scratch the surface. Come hear Kelly Joe Phelps live – and join the conversation.

The Brothers Comatose - Saturday, July 21st 8:00
A lot of folks at the recent Brothers Comatose show at the Treehouse couldn't believe how much talent they got for their money! And fun! So we immeidately invited them back! A sort of cross between the Maldives and Hot Buttered Rum, Ben and Alex Morrison believe great songs and great bluegrass can be a great, foot stompin' time! They've been making music together from birth. The dive bars of San Francisco forged their show and showmanship, and soon fans forced them to go nationwide! Doors began opening. This is the year the Brothers Comatose break out big time. They starred at South By Southwest, The Kate Wolf Folk Festival, and have already shared stages with Justin Townes Earl, Trampled by Turtles and John Doe, among others. But it's not their company that matters, it's their energy.
No Depression Magazine says: "This album is just filled with good, old time fun music!" Says Performer Magazine: "This isn't a band to just sit back and listen to. It's time to put away your suit and tie and break out your whiskey jug because the Brothers Comatose aren't going to take no for an answer." With strong harmonies, great musicianship on banjo, guitar, bass, mandolin and fiddle, plus refreshing arrangments on great standards as well as originals, their shows can't help but remind folk that music is collective, is for dancing, is for sharing, and for whatever else you might do with friends and family in your own living room. On July 21, consider The Treehouse Cafe your living room!

Thad Beckman - Thursday, July 26th 8:00
Fans of Tom Russell will recognize Thad Beckman as the brilliant side-man who accompanied Tom during his recent February show at The Treehouse. But, as Tom Russell pointed out, Thad is a vastly talented and versatile entertainer in his own right, and he has agreed to return to the Treehouse for a solo show this summer. He will also be conducting a guitar picking workshop the same afternoon, so all you pickers out there will want to be sure and sign up before it sells out! Thad Beckman has opened for and worked with Bo Diddley, The Shirelles, B.B. King, Emmy Lou Harris, The Band, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, James Cotton, Albert Collins and Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks. “If you have never heard Mr. Beckman play, you have really been missing out. Anyone in the audience could instantly recognize Mr. Beckman as a master of his craft.” -No Depression "Beckman plays an engaging blend of folk, singer-songwriter and blues music. Not everyone can pull off such a combination, but Beckman has chops, writing talent, a big personality and a bag full of true stories which all dovetail for a cool show.” - San Antonio Express-News

JB and Groove Fiery - Saturday, July 28th 8:00
The Northwest’s answer to Toots & The Maytals, it’s JB & Groove Fiery returning to the Treehouse for another blazing summer Dancehall Party! Everyone leaves plenty happy! JB & his band Groove Fiery are just that – a smoking tight reggae band that has shared stages all over the world with reggae legends such as Eek-A-Mouse and Pato Baton. This is major key, major-happy music – you’ll foget it’s Bainbridge Island and think you’re under palm trees! Hailing from St. John’s, Antigua, JB’s musical roots can be traced back to the age of 8, playing Steel Drums and chanting to his favorite rhythm on stage whenever invited. This natural talent developed into writing and composing in both Steel drums and reggae. Since relocating to Seattle, JB has gathered a calabash of musicians bringing in their experiences from a variety of genres and adapting to JB’s unique musical arrangment and vocal stylings. JB’s infectious blend of roots reggae, rude-boy/ragga, dancehall, lovers rock with a dash of humor, poured over his high energy stage presence, is one performance you won’t want to miss. This group of musicians have been individually and together playing around the Northwest, Hawaii, England and the Caribbean for 20+ years. And don’t forget JB’s house DJ too, rocking you steady between sets!

Joy Kills Sorrow - Thursday, August 9th 8:00
As their name implies, Joy Kills Sorrow creates music that embraces life, with the youthful exuberance and experimentation that comes with such a sense of wonder. Featuring Bainbridge Island hometown hero Wes Corbitt on banjo, Joy Kills Sorrow has broken into the big leages, headlining festivals like Wintergrass, Telluride, and the String Summit. But the Boston-based string band doesn't just sell out bluegrass festivals; these innovators have the experience, training, and youthful courage to have gained a far wider audience, getting regular airplay on indie stations like KEXP & KBCS. Lead singer Emma Beaton‘s haunting vocals and the ensemble’s rootsy variation on Americana is just as apt to appeal to fans of Mumford & Sons and Fleet Foxes as committed Stanley Brothers enthusiasts. All of the members have been touted as virtuosos. Beaton was nominated for “Traditional Vocalist of the Year” at the Canadian Folk Music Awards 2010 and won “Young Performer of the Year” at the age of 18 at the Canadian Folk Music Awards 2008. She quickly caught the ear of bluegrass super-star Laurie Lewis, who says she has a “voice like a laser.” A classically trained cellist, she formerly studied at Berklee College of Music and has worked with Crooked Still. Bassist Bridget Kearney, who double majored in Jazz Bass at The New England Conservatory of Music and English at Tufts University, is the primary songwriter of the group. In 2006, Kearny won the John Lennon Songwriting contest for her songs “Sometimes When I’m Drunk” and “You’re Wearing My Favorite Shirt.” Guitarist Matthew Arcara is the winner of Winfield’s National Flatpicking Championship. Jacob Jolliff was Berklee School of Music’s first full-scholarship mandolin student and a veteran performer, who has toured professionally since the age of 11 and shared the stage with David Grisman and Mike Marshall. Wes Corbett, banjo, has toured nationally with Crooked Still and The Biscuit Burners, and he’s currently teaching banjo at Berklee School of Music. Bainbridge Islanders heard him often while growing up, playing with Simon Chrisman on hammered dulcimer. Joy Kills Sorrow is that rare blend of influences that transcends musical genres, age groups, and tastes. This will be a joyful night you won't want to miss at The Treehouse. Get your tickets early!

Paperboys - Saturday, August 25th 8:00
The Paperboys have trekked countless tours of North America and Europe, made TV and movie appearances, recorded movie scores, and won several music awards including Canada's version of The Grammy's, The JUNO Award. This is the jumpinest genre-bending band north of the equator! It is the only multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-generational, multi-lingual, multi-instrumental, co-ed band you may find! ThePaperboys were formed by Mexican born Tom Landa in the mid nineties in Vancouver. In a music scene dominated by flannel and grunge, Tom had a vision of forming a band that fused Folk, Celtic and Bluegrass music with Pop and Rock. These days it includes a 3 piece horn section and digs deep into Tom's Mexican heritage by adding Son Jarocho and Afro-Mexican grooves to the mix. Yet still the band's true uniqueness is and has always been live. It is here where the only opinion that matters is that of the fans. For the past 15 years, The Paperboys have been selling out venues throughout the globe. From Mexican to Irish Jigs and Reels and a good dose of Country and Bluegrass, to healthy of servings of Ska, Soca and African Highlife... This is definitely FOLK music, but not in the Kumbaya style. It Rocks incredibly hard and is extremely danceable, but that is not to say it can't be slow and beautiful. It can be heart breaking, but also ecstatic. In short, it' the ultimate EVERYMAN's (and woman's) band! "Once heard, you will cross mountains, valleys, floods and tempests to see them. Even the ends of the earth, it will be worth the journey!" David Shipley, CD BABY Make sure your tickets are for the right show!

Eilen Jewell - Saturday, September 1st 2012 8:00
Eilen Jewell isn't opening for Lucinda Williams on her worldwide tour for nothing. Her new album Queen Of The Minor Key exquisitly showcases her poignant songwriting, powerful musical delivery, and stunning voice. While such grit and grace are aptly paired with Williams, Eilen Jewell is nobody's understudy. She has been compared to everyone from Emmylou Harris to Peggy Lee, yet remains distinct and confident in her own progression.
And why not? Eilen Jewel has taken the world by storm, while working with some of the greatest legends in the business along the way (her current tour shares stages with Buddy Guy, John Fogerty, Maceo Parker, Crosby, Stills & Nash, among others).
Here is what some of the most prestigious reviewers on the planet are saying about Eilen Jewell:
"[Jewell] embellishes the classic Nashville vocal approach with appealing measures of blues, pop, and jazz." - New Yorker
"Dark and haunting...but alluring just the same...Give me more of that voice." - USA Today
Sometimes as darkly damaged as Lucinda Williams, at others as defiant and teasing as prime Peggy Lee and always authentically Americana in the Gillian Welch tradition....She's mighty good. - Los Angeles Daily News
Jewel's music has the languorous quietude of (Gillian) Welch or Norah Jones, but there is something more direct, almost in your face, about her stark, neo traditional melodies, subdued vocals, and confident, slow-swaying groove. It's as if she's daring us to say we miss the bells and whistles of pop...Jewell's songs are achingly good, twanged-out elegies to a world of barbed wire, rusty trucks, and a frontier that no longer exists. - The Boston Globe
Born in Idaho in 1979, Jewell began her musical adventure busking on the streets of Santa Fe, then moved to Venice Beach, California, where she again set out her guitar case. Since her official 2006 debut, Boundary County, Jewell has surveyed a wide range of traditional musical styles, from the folk and jug band leanings of her early recordings, through an album-length homage to Loretta Lynn and the country gospel of her work with The Sacred Shakers, right up to 2009's Sea of Tears, which bristled with the electricity of '60s UK garage rock and Chicago blues. Queen of the Minor Key draws on everything from classic country to early R&B, with an emphasis on sounds from the seamier side of the tracks. Don't miss chance to see an incredible star at the peak of her craft right here in the warm confines of the Treehouse Cafe!
